when i got home from work tonight, i heard a lot of screaming coming from some of the nearby houses. now, this isnt an unusual occurrence. my neighborhood, while not the ghetto, is close enough to it, so there are usually some interesting incidents. while i was unlocking the door to the house today, i peeked around the side of the building to see if i could see what was going on. i didnt see anything, but i heard a lot of colorful language screamed in a teenage boys cracking voice.

i got up to my apartment, grabbed a snack, and opened the door to my porch to get a better look at the scene. a boy, around fourteen or so, was red-faced and having a fit in someones backyard, repeatedly shrieking, "you fuckers set me up! you set me up!" he was crying and flailing his arms. at one point, he picked up a large chunk of concrete and flung it at an old garage then threw a stick into the air. i could hear voices taunting him as he yelled and threw things and made threats. i just stood in the doorway watching the action as i ate banana bread; i had a front-row seat. eventually, i shut the door, and the crisis died down soon after that. i suspect that there will be a lot more yelling going on in my hood once the weather warms up. there are always a lot more police cars around in the summer.

today, i had lunch with winfreys sister. since winfrey is off doing the peace corps thing in niger, africa, i figured i shouldnt lose touch with her family. i found out that her sister liz works down the street from me, so we met up today. liz filled me in on what i havent heard about winfrey. all i can say is that win is a very very strong person. i would have been on the first plane back home.

the toilet situation is one that horrifies me. apparently, the toilet is a cockroach-and-maggot-filled hole in the ground. and there is no toilet paper. you have to use your hand and some water. no wonder win always feels dirty.
