2001-11-09 so. the environmental conference thingie was not so great yesterday. kristi and i did just about everything at the last minute. we bought a display board for our presentation and some other things, and then caught a bus to chatham college, where this thing was being held. (we're at the university of pittsburgh, 5 minutes down the road.) we got off the bus a little late and spent some time kind of wandering around, lugging the display board, and accosting innocent passers-by. ("do you live around here? do you know where chatham college is?") finally, we ran into roxanne and olga from our class and practically ran to them in relief. so we were pretty annoyed by the time we got to the gallery where we were supposed to set up (we were stuck in with the "eco-art"). the other presenters from our class were already there, and their displays were better than ours. overachievers. a woman, presumably one of the coordinators, was standing over everyone and bitching about how we weren't finished setting up yet. "it's customary when you have an opening to have everything done...blah blah blah...bitch bitch bitch." (ok...it was 3.30 in the afternoon, and no one was there yet. so who cares?!) finally she just left. so kristi and i, especially kristi, were kind of stressed and grumpy. but it turned out okay. we mostly just sat outside, helped ourselves to the snacks, and chatted with our classmates. (i did continually ask kristi if we could leave, probably adding to her stress.) it wasn't quite what i thought it was going to be like. i thought there would be more people, and we'd have to stand by our displays and answer questions, but i'm sorta glad we didn't have to do that. so it's over with. and it's friday now. which leads me into something i stole from someone else (and i forget who that is. sorry.) something called a "friday five"....so here are the questions and my answers. i hope everyone else has lovely weekends, too! *** oh yeah, the ever-fabulous ms. migrainegirl mentioned that she thought "public health" was self-explanatory (see yesterday's entry). yeah, it is. but people always seem to expect a better explanation than "keeping people healthy." public health is way more than inspecting restaurants and giving people flu shots, and at least this whole anthrax nonsense is letting people see that. ok...i'll stop being such a public health student now. |
