2:36 p.m.

we were hit by a bad storm early friday evening. kitty and i were enjoying a nice dinner and watching the sky growing steadily darker. then the rain came. buckets. torrents. the wind picked up something fierce, and soon i could see nothing but a wet, white mist. thick bolts of lightning and booming thunder punctuated the storm. soon after, my lights flickered and went out. hail pounded onto my porch and bounced on the ground below.

the storm didn't last long, and when the rain stopped, i stepped onto my deck and surveyed the damage. leaves and tree branches littered the alley and yard behind my house. lawn furniture lay drunkenly after its tumble.

without electricity, i didn't know the extent of the storm until i talked to friends a few hours later. roofs were lifted off of houses, trees were ripped out of the ground, windows were blown out. perhaps the scariest of all, the roof over a ride at an amusement park near my house caved in, killing someone and injuring many others.

my house is along a major route to the park, and since it has opened for the summer, traffic in my 'hood has increased tenfold. earlier that day, i had been cursing the park for inconveniencing me.

i didn't have electricity until early sunday morning. i never wanted to live the amish lifestyle, and now i have another reason why. i had to throw out a whole refrigerator's worth of food. but it all seems so trivial compared to those horribly injured children at the amusement park.
