8:54 a.m.

i left my computer at work on all night, and whenever i do that, i always have lots of amusing random icq messages waiting for me in the morning. like this one from someone calling himself "osama bn ladin," "hi there like to chat to the terrorist of love ??" ha ha. made my morning. almost as funny as the one that said something like, "hi space girl. is there space in your heart for me?" (my nickname is space girl.) isn't it reassuring to know that there are men who will fall in "love" with you without knowing anything about you??

yesterday was an interesting and varied day. i stopped by my former place of enployment, making sure that the dean wasn't around, because if i were to talk to him, i'd probably throw up in his face or kick him. chatted with my old boss a bit, then met kristen for lunch. after that, i met up with sharlene to drive out to a woman's apartment for an interview. sharlene is working on a project that i guess i'm supposed to be a part of. (i love my new boss, but she's a bit vague.) it's actually an interesting study--they're looking at women who bring their children in for mental health and/or social services. the moms are interviewed and assessed for depression and anxiety. as you'd expect, almost all of them fit that criteria. sharlene was doing a baseline interview, and i tagged along so i could see what it was all about because i'll probably be doing them. it was 2 hours long, so it got kind of boring near the end, but i enjoy hearing people's stories...this woman is 24 and has 6 kids under the age of 7. and like many things i do, the trip turned out to be an adventure, sharlene and i got lost on the way out and the way back and almost got slammed by a minivan. (i didn't say it was good adventure!)

all day, i kept forgetting that i was going to see maya angelou speak last night, so it was like a nice surprise when i went. [i just got sucked away for a faculty meeting here, so it's an hour and a half later, and i'm somewhat comatose.] she was such a captivating speaker, and made me laugh so hard that no sound was coming out. at one point, she said that educational institutions were the "rainbows in the clouds," which i found thought-provoking.

quotes of the day:

"i'd like to think that if i were going to live in an 'exclusive comunity,' i wouldn't want to see my neighbors." -kristen

"i'm not used to being around people who don't know what anything means." -katie
