2001-10-22
10:40 a.m.

here i am, safe and sound and back from my weekend of rock stars and culture. i did not contract 'thrax. i did not even see any white powdery substances, unless you count the open package of sweet n' low on the sidewalk in baltimore. (just down from the lo mein and general tso's chicken being kicked around by passers-by. yum! dinner!)

i had a bit of a freak-out thursday night because i still hadn't done anything to prepare for the weekend. amy and i went to a lecture about the domesday book after class because we are so scholarly. by the time i got home, i was feeling icky and tired and not wanting to decide what the hell clothes to bring and to clean out the cat's litter box. whine. i'm so opressed.

amy and i left friday morning and got to baltimore just in time to get a snack and stand in line outside of the arena. (in case you haven't read earlier updates, we were there to see u2.) the hours of standing on the sidewalk amongst the food remnants and empty beer cans paid off, because we got a good place to stand on the floor. we met some really nice people at the show. unfortunately, we lost ken and dost, a couple who had been with us in line, after the show, and we never got to say good-bye.

"due to illness," garbage didn't play. i was NOT happy about that. i think shirley manson is a goddess, and i was looking forward to seeing her. we got to hear the melodic stylings of graham parker and the figgs instead. they didn't suck, and their set was mercifully short. u2 put on a great show, though. i've never been a huge fan. i don't own any albums and only know the more popular songs, but i really enjoyed it. i took a freaking roll and a half of pictures. i'll have them up as soon as i get them developed and scanned.

after the show, we drove to theron's cute little house and got some grub in his cute little neighborhod. (thanks to theron for putting us up for the night!) after a yummy breakfast the next day, amy and i set out for dc.

we got kind of a late start then got a little lost looking for our hotel, so we didn't start our quest for culture until mid afteroon. (although i do confess that we wasted some time fawning over our hotel room. it was probably bigger than my apartment and had a kitchen.) first stop was the smithsonian and then a rapid tour of the national gallery so i could drool on the impressionist paintings. later, we had dinner near our hotel in dupont circle and then explored the surrounding area. there were lots of cute shops and intersting places to eat...i liked it a lot.

we managed to get an early start the next morning and started off at the holocaust museum. it was very, very depressing but also very, very well done. it's a powerful place. everyone is silent as they make their way through the exhibits. i was on the verge of tears in spots.

after that, we went back to the national gallery and made a very brief stop in the american history museum. we had a late lunch in georgetown and did some shopping there, as well. (it was a very expensive weekend, but i bought lots of art and cool stuff.) after our atm cards protested from so much use, we headed home.

what was interesting to me was that i expected to see more of the patriotism, etc., that's all over the rest of the country, but i didn't see so much of it. the only way that i could tell that something had happened was the guards that poked through our bags with sticks and flashlights at the entrances to every museum. not that i'm complaining.

so i'm back to work today. i feel refreshed, and ready for another week of slack!

"i wanted to throw my pants at bono, and i'm not even gay." -guy behind us at the u2 show
