public transportation is always an interesting cultural experience. you never know who you'll see or what DSM-IV types will sit next to you. here's a sampling of the regulars who share my route.

simpleminded man: stands literally in the middle of the street as he's waiting for the bus and clutching his lunch bag. for some reason, no drivers ever beep or get mad at him.

man with an imaginary friend: his friend seems to be an obstinate type, as mwaif is always shaking his head at him and gesticulating madly.

manic woman: she talks to everyone loudly and switches seats at least three times while listening to loud music that sounds suspiciously like korn or some such. (i don't know what korn sounds like; i'm only guesing here.)

sullen boy: stares out the window and doesn't move the entire time, except to rearrange his knit hat over his messy hair. i think he works at the library. sometimes, manic woman talks to him, and he grunts in return.

sequin hat woman: has an interesting black baseball hat with sequins in different colored stripes radiating out from the center.

woman who likes to smell her hair: she plays with her hair and sniffs it loudly almost continuously. when she's not doing that, she slaps herself in the arm repeatedly.

black case man: wears a big black trenchcoat and carries a big, battered, locked case. reads sci-fi novels and listens to music.

sullen girl: has a sullen/surly expression on her face. (i can't figure out if it's from her crazy huge overbite.)

i guess those are the only people i can remember for now. please note that i am not making fun of people with mental illnesses specifically. i make fun of everyone.
