i’ve seen some odd things the past few days. a police car with a “for sale by owner” sign in the windshield. a mobile post office. a church that burned down. a car that ran into a telephone pole after being smashed by another vehicle. the world is full of interesting things if you keep your eyes open.
the area where i work was a big old mess yesterday. there was a funeral for two firefighters who died in the aforementioned church fire. streets were blocked off, police cars were everywhere. i almost got run over by port authority buses sporting black ribbons and carrying mourners. it seemed like every fire department in the state of pennsylvania was driving down the street with their lights on. i came into work late yesterday because i was at a middle school earlier that morning. it took me a long time to slog through the traffic, and when i did, there were no parking spots. at all. so i kept driving until i got home. i’m not trying to be disrespectful, but if there are going to be thousands of people and almost as many vehicles added to an area that already has too much human and automotive traffic and not enough room, we should have the option of working from home or having the day off altogether.
i’m thinking of taking part in a study that’s looking at acupuncture as a possible treatment for depression. it’s through the center for complementary medicine at the Evil Empire. i talked to a woman about it this morning, and she said that i qualify but that i’d have to go off of my meds and not go to therapy for the eight weeks of the study. i’m a little concerned about that, but i’m all for studies that will help bring so-called “alternative” therapies into mainstream acceptance. i think acupuncture is very cool. i have to wait to hear back from my psychiatrist to see if it’s okay to stop taking my meds for a bit. of course, he’s out of town this week. he’s a part of the Evil Empire, so he might be more receptive to the study. i forgot to ask if i get paid, but free acupuncture rocks, too.

the friday five:
If you...
1. ...owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?
inexpensive, healthy food. it’s very difficult to find around here. (i’m not surprised…this is pittsburgh, after all. they put french fries in everything.) my only option for a good salad for lunch is panera. i want a place that offers a variety of healthy convenience foods that won’t break the bank. i’d have a focus on vegetarian, organic, and vegan options. my mission would be to prove to the populace that they don’t have to fear healthy food. i’d call my restaurant “yum.”
2. ...owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?
amy and i sometimes talk about opening an underwear store called “knickers.” we’d have the coolest undies around. as amy says, we’d have sensible cut (i.e. no thongs) undies with entertaining quirky designs you can’t find anywhere else. teapots, daisies, pirates, kittens, pirate kittens…the possibilities boggle the mind. (and if you steal the idea to our store, amy will bust your kneecaps.)
3. ...wrote a book, what genre would it be?
either fiction or a memoir. i’ve read enough memoirs to know that you don’t have to do anything earth-shattering in order to write one. you just have to have had a weird/tragic/interesting life and/or have learned a Great Lesson. i’m sure i don’t exactly qualify, but who cares? i’d make it so funny, no one would notice.
4. ...ran a school, what would you teach?
i was just telling someone the other day that schools should teach more life skills—how to get a marriage license, shop for a car, buy a home, balance a checkbook, plan meals, etc. i (used to) know calculus, which has served me NO purpose in my adult life, but i had no idea where to go to get my marriage license.
5. ...recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?
i like electronic music, so it would be very much influenced by that. and it would be less necessary for me to sing on such an album. you do not want to hear me sing.

quote of the day:
me: i wonder what i’m going to be like when i’m old.
rashida: i’m going to be one of those old people kids throw rocks at.
